About

SMFA approached the Gawler Childcare project as a unique opportunity to blend heritage character with contemporary early learning environments.

The adaptive reuse of two existing heritage buildings is complemented by carefully considered new additions, collectively forming a cohesive 135-place centre that respects the past while supporting modern educational needs.

The design approach was developed specifically for this centre, aligning with Confident Kids’ broader brand while establishing a unique contextural identity to Gawler. This design language draws inspiration from the farming history and is expressed through both the interior design and custom fabricated play equipment, ensuring a consistent and engaging experience throughout.

Internally, the existing structures have been thoughtfully reconfigured to create open, flexible learning environments that support a variety of activities and teaching styles. Visual transparency and strong connections between spaces were prioritised, fostering a sense of openness, supervision, and engagement.

The design also emphasises a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor environments, enhancing natural light, ventilation, views to the natural creek landscape and opportunities for play-based learning. Through the careful integration of heritage elements with contemporary interventions, the centre achieves a functional, engaging, and cohesive environment for children, staff, and the wider community.
